Speaker Johnson Accuses Biden Of Tricking Voters
House Speaker Mike Johnson of Louisiana delivered a scathing critique of President Joe Biden’s latest border plan during his weekly press conference, dismissing it as mere superficiality. Johnson harkened back to Biden’s earlier statements, recalling how the President had previously asserted that he had exhausted all avenues to rectify the situation at the border, implying that Biden himself was responsible for the chaos.
Biden’s recent executive order, unveiled on Tuesday, prohibits migrants from obtaining asylum if officials determine that the southern border is overwhelmed, effectively paving the way for a potential shutdown of significant sections of the border. However, Johnson was quick to point out that Biden and Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas had previously issued a staggering 64 executive orders aimed at opening up the border, suggesting that the administration intentionally engineered the influx of migrants.
According to Johnson, Biden’s sudden pivot with this new executive order appears insincere and lacks substance, characterizing it as a mere facade to address a crisis of their own making. He argued that if Biden genuinely cared about the border crisis, such action would have been taken much earlier. Johnson expressed skepticism regarding the contents of the executive order, suggesting that crucial issues like the flawed asylum process, the reinstatement of the “remain in Mexico” policy, and measures to curb catch and release would likely be overlooked. These are precisely the issues that Republicans had previously addressed in a border bill over a year ago, according to Johnson.
In essence, Johnson painted a picture of a reactive administration scrambling to mitigate a crisis they themselves had exacerbated through previous policy decisions. He emphasized the importance of scrutinizing the finer details of the executive order, warning that the true intentions and effectiveness of the measure would become apparent only upon closer examination.
