Democrats have lost their advantage over Republicans in appealing to Latino voters with their immigration policies.
Equis, a research firm dedicated to Latino interests, discovered that more Latinos in key battleground states now trust Republicans and former President Donald Trump over President Joe Biden and Democrats on immigration matters.
In a poll conducted across Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, 41% of Latino respondents expressed greater confidence in Trump’s approach to the border compared to 38% who favored the handling by Democrats and Biden.
The level of trust in immigration policy between Latinos and non-Hispanic Americans shows a similar trend, with 49% of non-Hispanic respondents trusting Republicans and 34% siding with Democrats.
Among registered Latino voters in these battleground states, 72% indicated they were somewhat or very concerned about Biden and Democrats failing to fulfill their immigration promises. Conversely, 64% expressed concern over what they viewed as Trump and the GOP’s “extreme measures” on border control.
The significant influx of migrants at the Mexico border is a major concern for most Latinos. A Pew Research survey highlighted that 74% of Latinos disapprove of the U.S. government’s handling of the migrant situation at the southern border.
Despite these challenges, Biden still maintains a lead over Trump among Latino voters overall. In a direct contest, Biden leads Trump among swing-state Latinos by 59% to 39%. However, this lead diminishes with the introduction of third-party candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. In such a scenario, Biden’s support among Latino voters drops to 47%, while Trump’s falls to 34%.
