Here’s why…
In a recent critique, Michael Steele, former Chairman of the Republican National Committee, voiced disapproval of Donald Trump’s ongoing propagation of conspiracy theories regarding election integrity.
Expressing his views on The Weekend as co-host, Steele addressed Trump’s remarks in Wisconsin, where Trump hinted that he would only acknowledge election outcomes he deemed “honest.” Steele, a former lieutenant governor of Maryland, denounced this stance as a “feeble” campaign strategy.
According to Steele, Trump’s fear of defeat stems from a deep-seated concern for his ego rather than a genuine commitment to winning through legitimate means. He characterized Trump’s approach as reliant on coercion and intimidation rather than the hard work typically associated with political campaigning.
Steele bemoaned Trump’s persistence in perpetuating what he termed a “falsehood,” asserting that a potential second loss in November would simply reflect the will of the electorate rather than any systemic flaws in the electoral process.
Meanwhile, Bill Barr, former Attorney General, recently threw his support behind Trump’s 2024 candidacy despite their earlier disagreements over Trump’s handling of the 2020 election outcome. Barr’s assessment concluded that there was no substantial election interference affecting the results, a viewpoint that diverged from Trump’s narrative.
While Steele publicly endorsed Joe Biden prior to the 2020 presidential election, he has yet to announce his endorsement for the current election cycle. However, given Trump’s status as the presumptive Republican nominee, it is probable that Steele will once again support the incumbent president.
Despite Trump’s rhetoric about the importance of “honest” elections, he has softened his stance on mail-in ballots, which were previously a focal point of his claims of election fraud. Notably, a significant portion of Trump voters utilized absentee or mail-in ballots in 2020, indicating a shift in his campaign’s approach to election procedures.
