Kamala To Impeach Biden?
West Virginia’s Attorney General Patrick Morrisey, a Republican, made headlines when he urged Vice President Harris to invoke the 25th Amendment against President Biden. Morrisey’s call was grounded in his assertion that President Biden lacks the physical capability to effectively fulfill his duties.
Citing a recent 388-page special counsel report characterizing Biden as an “elderly man with a poor memory,” Morrisey expressed deep concerns about the president’s cognitive decline. He emphasized the importance of having a mentally fit leader, particularly in times of crisis both domestically and internationally.
Morrisey’s concerns stem from a yearlong investigation into classified documents from Biden’s tenure as vice president, which were discovered at his former office and private residence in Delaware. The attorney general argued that these findings paint a clear picture of a president who is not up to the task.
The 25th Amendment, enacted in 1965 after President Kennedy’s assassination, provides a mechanism for addressing presidential succession and allows for the removal of a president deemed physically incapable. Despite never being utilized, discussions around its potential invocation gained traction after the Capitol attack on January 6, 2021.
Morrisey’s stance echoes sentiments expressed by other Republicans, such as Rep. Claudia Tenney and former President Trump. The overarching concern revolves around Biden’s age and his ability to lead effectively, particularly in light of recent memory lapses.
While Biden and his team have downplayed these concerns, polls indicate that a majority of Americans harbor doubts about his fitness for reelection. The ongoing debate underscores the significance of age and cognitive ability in assessing presidential leadership.
